Automatic Weather Station

Automatic Weather Station in the Allt a' Mharcaidh Catchment Automatic Weather Station The Automatic Weather Station (AWS) was erected in the Allt a' Mharcaidh in 1986 at an altitude of approximately 600m. It was originally installed to provide continuous weather data for the Surface Water Acidification Programme and has since supported a range of research at this site. Readings of solar radiation, net radiation, relative humidity, air temperature, rain, wind speed and wind direction are recorded every ten seconds which are then averaged and recorded at hourly intervals. As well as allowing a detailed analysis of the localised patterns experienced at this particular location, continuous sampling also ensures that episodic events are closely monitored. This is especially useful as processes occurring under extreme conditions often have significant impacts on catchment, hydrological, chemical and biological dynamics. The AWS therefore provides an important dataset with continuous records for currently 22 years.

The Centre of Ecology and Hydrology maintain the AWS database and any data requests should be directed to Mike Hutchins at CEH Wallingford.
