Congratulations to Emma Woodham, a 1st year Biochemistry student at the University of Aberdeen and Diana Feliciano, a first year PhD student studying Greenhouse Gas Budgeting and Management with the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, the two winners of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute student bursary to attend the British Science Festival in Guildford in September.

Both applicants were chosen on the strength of their supporting statement which outlined their interest in science and their reasons for wanting to attend the British Science Festival.

Emma said, "For me, there are so many reasons why science is fascinating. Its sheer diversity is truly remarkable, and the opportunities it provides for us in our world today could never have been imagined a hundred years ago. I particularly enjoy learning about the molecular side of science; I find it fascinating to see the world from a microscopic perspective! Being able to take part in the British Science Festival is an excellent opportunity to further my knowledge, meet new people, and witness cutting edge science delivered by todays experts."

Diana said, "My area of study is climate change and because I have just recently started my PhD I'm curious to discover how other fields in technology and engineering are adapting their research in order to give better responses to the challenges of climate change. I am particularly interested in renewable energies and what can be done at the regional level and I'm interested know what other students who will be participating in the British Science Festival think and feel about climate change and if their individual behaviour changes after learning more about it."

The British Science Festival provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage in a wide range of science topics, immerse themselves in current debate, and meet leading scientists and speakers. Not only this, but the Festival is a hot spot for media attention and a vibrant social scene, whatever your age or background.

All of the events featured are tailored for non-science specialists, as are the debates, exhibitions and social events which form an important part of the experience.

This year the Festival is hosted by the University of Surrey in Guildford from 5th-10th September.
