The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) united on April 1st, 2011, strengthening Scotland's rural-environmental research capacity in the fields of food, land use and climate change and further enhancing our international competitiveness.
Both SCRI and the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute have international reputations for excellence, and together we will be able to strengthen our ability to undertake research of global importance. The new Institute will demonstrate a multi-disciplinary and efficient model of research. This increase in effectiveness will strengthen funding relationships, bring commercial opportunities and deliver wider economical, environmental and social benefits.

Chief Operating Officer appointed
Dr Karen Shaw has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer of The James Hutton Institute. Currently working at the University of Manchester as Head of the University Research Office, Dr Shaw will take up her post at the end of January 2011.
The role of the Chief Operating Officer is to initiate, develop, lead and promote the efficient and effective delivery of operational, administrative and governance arrangements for The James Hutton Institute, and to provide strategic planning advice to the CEO and the executive management team.
Name Chosen for New Institute
The new “super research institute” to be formed from SCRI, the crop research centre in Invergowrie, and Aberdeen’s Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, is to be named in honour of the Scottish Enlightenment science pioneer, James Hutton.
The James Hutton Institute will bring together existing Scottish expertise in crop research, soils and land-use, and will make a major contribution to the study of key global issues, such as food and energy security, biodiversity, and how climate change will affect the way we use land and grow crops.
Role of Chief Operating Officer advertised
The Chief Operating and Planning Officer will initiate, develop, lead and promote the efficient and effective delivery of operational, administrative and governance arrangements for the New Institute, and provide strategic planning advice to the CEO and the executive management team.

Chief Executive named for Scotland’s new research institute
A leading Scots scientist - currently working in Australia - has been named as the Chief Executive designate to lead Scotland's new, crop, food and land use research organisation. The new institute will be formed from the merger of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute (MLURI) in Aberdeen and SCRI, Scotland’s leading crop research centre based at Invergowrie in Perth and Kinross.
