Dr Richard Birnie from the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute will be giving a presentation entitled “Living without oil” (or can we just get it from the fields?), at the Royal Northern and University Club, Aberdeen. This discussion lunch is organised by Paull & Williamsons.
For thousands of years people have depended upon the land for both food and energy, and over 40% of the world’s population still depend upon wood fuel for cooking and heating. In Scotland, the connection between land and energy has long been broken; first through the use of coal and more recently through use of oil and gas. This experience has been similar to most industrialised countries.
However, the recent US drive for biofuel production, and the related demand for grain, has reconnected land, food and energy issues in a way that we did not anticipate even 5 years ago. The aim of this networking lunch is to explore whether land-based energy production has any place in the post-oil energy economy of Scotland. Based upon research at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute in Aberdeen, we will explore the potential contributions of a range of biomass energy sources and identifies those with most economic potential.
Richard Birnie has been involved in research on land based renewable energy systems at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute for over 15 years. His work has mainly focussed on identifying resource potentials, and assessing social attitudes towards the related developments. Whilst most of his work has been concerned with renewable energy developments in Scotland, he has also done some work in China on the impacts of the Three Gorges Dam on local food security.
