Professor of Conservation Science Georgina Mace will share with us part of her immense experience with global biodiversity issues and the development of influential policy instruments. She will begin with a general overview of the status of global biodiversity and how to assess it, including the Convention on Biological Diversity's 2010 target and the prospects for it being met at global and/or regional levels. Starting with the framework developed in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment she will then review the role of biodiversity in ecosystem services and the consequences of continuing to lose biodiversity for people and other environmental services. She will end up with some general comments about international processes underway to address the issues raised.
