Current research activities

Dr. Andrew Moncriff is Associate Director - Hawkins & Associates Limited.

His research interest and activities are:

  • Investigation of fires and explosions in a wide range of settings including vehicles and numerous different types of premises.
  • Significant investigations include duct fires in two international airports, fires in several types of industrial vehicles leading to design changes by the manufacturer, fires in major retail and storage premises.
  • Investigation of decorative and structural failures in building materials.  Major investigations have included flood damage to sandwich panels in a cosmetics factory and food premises, widespread failure of tile cement in a student halls of residence and corrosion and rot requiring the replacement of 300 bathrooms in a prestigious London hotel.
  • Investigation of causes of subsidence and other geotechnical issues.
  • Analysis of soils and rocks for criminal and civil investigations.  Major investigations include the Vicky Hall murder enquiry in 1999 (Defence) and the Soham murders of 2003 (Prosecution).

Regular lecturer at international conferences and training courses for Police and Fire Brigade fire investigators.
