Engaging young people in planning
McLaren Hall, Killin, June 2007
In June 2007, schools and youth groups participated in events organised in collaboration between the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority, to identify aspirations and fears relating to landscape change. The outputs were to inform the creation of an issues list for the National Park's Development Plan. The venue was the McLaren Hall in Killin.
Participants were first introduced to the area around their school or the area in which they live, identifying their school, house or other local features on aerial photographs or satellite imagery.
The Virtual Landscape Theatre was first used to introduce children to The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, raising awareness of the geography and landforms of west central Scotland, the extent of the National Park.
The virtual environment was then used to enable children to discuss the area around Killin, Glen Dochart, Loch Tay and Loch Earn, identifying topics to discuss such as the provision of shops, housing, forests and trees, renewable energy and conservation.
The findings included a desire for the replacement of derilict shopping sites in Killin with shops for sports clothes or fast food, provision of housing for local people, build within the existing area of Killin village, no further house building in areas at risk of flooding, the planting of broadleaf woodland uphill from Killin, no extension of commercial forestry plantations, and limited wind energy production for local or farm use.
Thank you to the following schools and youth groups who participated in the event:
- Killin Primary School (all classes)
- Killin Brownies
- Killin Guides
- Lochearnhead Primary School
- McLaren High School, Callander (4th and 5th year Geography)
