In parallel with the implementation of the LADSS components there has also been a programme of field testing initially to provide data for system development purposes. Two of the Macaulay research stations, Glensaugh and Hartwood were surveyed. Four other sites were added in 1998 and 1999: Altyre Estate in Morayshire, Balmacara Township near Kyle of Lochalsh, Edinglassie Estate near Huntly in Aberdeenshire and Faughill Farm in the Borders near St. Boswells. Two further sites, Kincardine O'Neil in Deeside and the Cumbria Campus of the University of Central Lancashire at Newton-Rigg, Penrith was added in 2000. These sites serve to validate the LADSS land use modules and impact assessments and test the functionality of the land use planning tools. Balmacara, Edinglassie and Faughill were used to test the site characterisation methodologies. The later sites from 2000 were also used to test the infra-red video-camera system. More recently, work has been carried out at a farm in Montepulciano near Siena, Tuscany, Italy.
