Conceptual Model

The conceptual catchment model, developed through the international network is being used at the workshops to formulate/draft future water management scenarios, and questions such as those outlined below will be explored:

  • What pressures and sources can be identified through analysis of monitoring data?
  • What pollution problems do people living and working in a catchment see in their rivers?
  • Is the local knowledge of the people living in the catchment reflective of the information gleaned from monitoring data and modelling effort?
  • Will management strategies identified through analysis of monitoring data have any effect on people’s perceptions of the health of waters in their catchment?
  • What is the effective contribution of existing water management approaches and how these could be improved?

The results from the conceptual modelling work and the stakeholder workshops will be summarised in a non-technical report (in English and Portuguese) for policy-makers. Such an approach is currently being used to explore approaches to catchment management within a Scottish Government funded five-year research programme (cf. http://www.programme3.net/water345pollution.php) on several rivers in Scotland, including the Dee, Lunan and Cessnock rivers. Scientific data and research outcomes will be published in national and international journals.
