ACES logoAberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability

ACES brings together natural and social scientists to carry out inter-disciplinary research on environmental sustainability. Managing our natural environments in a way that is sustainable and meets the competing demands of society is one of the great challenges facing us in the 21st Century.

Our research focuses on three key areas:

  • Underlying processes. Understanding the environmental, economic and social processes and trade-offs underlying environmental sustainability;
  • Reconciling conflicts. Analysing and reconciling the conflicts that threaten sustainability, and
  • Developing solutions. Working with stakeholders and policy makers to develop strategies for sustainable environmental management.

Founded in 2007, ACES achieves this by building from the strengths of two high-profile research institutions - the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and the University of Aberdeen. ACES currently supports a core staff of academics and research students, and provides a platform for scientists, stakeholders and policy makers to develop inter-disciplinary science for environmental sustainability.

MLURI logoThe Macaulay Land Use Research Institute

The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute is the UK's premier land use research centre. Science Strategy aims include the provision of information that can assist in developing adaptive mechanisms and capacity to ensure sustainable development through effective policy and land use management; improvement of understanding of the effects of land use and climate change on water quality and quantity; and the understanding of social, economic, and environmental interactions and how these interactions influence, and are influenced by environmental change. The institute also hosts the nodal office on ‘integration and modelling’ of the Global Land Project (GLP), which has a number of relevant projects on environmental conservation in Brazil.

Aberdeen University logoAberdeen University

Aberdeen University is Scotland's third oldest and the fifth oldest in the UK. Aberdeen is an international university built on serving one of the most dynamic regions of Europe. The University of Aberdeen is a high quality research Institution as evidenced by the last Research Assessment Exercise. The School of Geosciences, which is the unity involved in the international network, has an excellent reputation for teaching and learning. The Education Guardian rated it highest for Geography in Scotland, and one of the top in the UK.

CPP logoPantanal Research Centre

The Pantanal Research Centre (CPP), which is based in the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) is an independent, non-profit organization with a humanitarian focus. The CPP seeks to contribute to the well-being of the people that live in the Pantanal by fostering sustainable development in the region. The CPP recognizes the international dimension of the Pantanal eco-system which is shared by the countries of Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay and also its importance as a water resource regulator of the whole of the Paraguay-Paraná river system. The CPP is one of the partners in the Pantanal Regional Environment Programme (PREP), which is supported by the United Nations University (UNU). The program is an international pilot project which is being considered a laboratory for finding ways of guiding research and actions that can help wetland areas around the world.

Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul

UFRGS is a centennial institution, both nationally and internationally acknowledged. A well-developed environment for scientific research and a far distinguished extension net that is constantly sponsoring many and varied activities to local communities have made UFRGS reach advanced standards for higher education assessment. The Institute of Hydraulic Research (IPH) is a leading South American centre on hydrology and water management. IPH has a long history of top quality academic research and specialised consultancy and, in the last decade, has played a major role in the implementation of the new water legislation in Brazil.

Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul

UFMS was established in 1979 and is one of the main academic centres in the west region of Brazil. UFMS has extensive cooperation with other national and international organisations, particularly in relation to regional development and environmental conservation. The university conducts academic activities in seven different units, which includes the campus of Corumbá in the middle of the Pantanal. Its department of Hydraulic and Transports will be the main participant in the international network.

Embrapa Pantanal

The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, was established on April 26, 1973. Its mission is to enable solutions through research, development and innovation for sustainable agriculture for the benefit of Brazilian society.
