Crown Area of Blackhall Sitka spruce trees

Crown width was measured at 1 metre intervals along the stem. Measurements were made parallel to the ground, rather than North-South or East-West. This was done since it was not physically possible to turn the crowns of overturned trees so that a "directional" measurement could be taken. This was converted into a total exposed crown area. The snapped trees had the smaller crowns on average than the undamaged trees, although the difference was not significant. This was unexpected since it suggests that those trees with the largest loads applied to them are either no more likely, and possibly less likely to snap than trees of the same diameter but with smaller crowns This is similar to the results found for the snow damaged pine nearby.
