The pattern of land use in any area has developed over time and is mainly controlled by the constraints imposed by the biophysical properties of the land.
There are additional constraints, not directly related to the land characteristics as such, but are imposed by humans i.e. society and cultural values.
In addition, there are a number of opportunities for different land uses on the machair.
