Crofting is a unique system of land tenure found only in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Crofters’ rights are protected by a series of parliamentary acts and the system is administered by the Crofters Commission.

Agricultural production is constrained by the physical environment and crofters need to supplement their income.
