There are a number of agricultural and agri-environmental schemes that help to support crofters and the land they manage

Between 1994 and 1999 the Highlands and Islands area received "Objective 1" funding from the European Union.

The Highlands and Islands area is no longer eligible for Objective 1, but a transition funding package was negotiated by the UK Government.

Policies are in place to help the people and environment of the machair
