Image showing areas we research in relation to Water ResourcesThis work allows us to develop a framework for predicting the responses of our waters to land-use and environmental changes.

This will assist in the determination of future environmental objectives for Scottish water bodies.

However, firstly there is a need for the current approaches - used in defining and achieving good ecological, chemical and microbiological status - to be evaluated.

There is also a need for future approaches to be developed through collaborative research and development.

Such approaches need to be based on a sound scientific understanding of how water bodies respond not only to the pressures we put upon them, but also our attempts to improve them as well.
