model_name uksnow
description The uksnow model calculates snow accumulations in cm for different durations (1hr, 3hr, 6hr & 24hr) for different frequencies (2/yr, 1/yr, 0.5/yr, 0.2/yr, 0.1/yr).
software ARC/INFO V.7.0.3
operating_system SUN SPARCSTATION, UNIX SunOS 5.4
isumm The model requires input parameters from the user which specify the extent of the area (in National Grid Coordinates) for which the user requires snow accumulation information, the grid cell size at which they require the output (minimum 100m) and the name of the output file. The programmes automatically read the other input parameters which are Mean Annual Snow Days at 100m height for the UK (held as a GRID coverage, originally from Jackson 1977) and height data (in metres) (also held as a GRID coverage) for the area.
ispecfile There is no sample input file. The parameters are entered into a user interface. The parameters required are the lower left corner of the area of interest (in National Grid coordinates of Eastings and Northings) the extent of the area in the x and y directions (in metres) and the grid cell size for the output coverage in metres (minimum 100m). The default values are: Minimum Eastings: 381410 Minimum Northings: 241515 X extent for area: 50000m Y extent for area: 50000m Grid cell Size: 100m
iexpspecfile Input is through a user interface which appears when the model is run.
csumm The constant parameters which are used to calculate the snow accumulations are the "lapse rate" of 6.5 days per 100m (used to convert from Mean Annual Snow Days at 100m to Mean Annual Snow Days for a particular height) and coefficients derived from regressions used to relate the mean annual snow days at a particular place to the snow accumulations of different durations for different return periods.
cspecfile The constants are embedded in the model programmes.
cexpspecfile N/A
osumm The output parameters are the Snow accumulations for different durations of snow fall with different return periods. 1 hr duration with 2, 1, 0.5, 0.2 & 0.1 frequencies 3 hr duration with 2, 1, 0.5, 0.2 & 0.1 frequencies 6 hr duration with 2, 1, 0.5, 0.2 & 0.1 frequencies 24 hr duration with 2, 1, 0.5, 0.2 & 0.1 frequencies
ospecfile The output file exists as a grid in ARC/INFO (will provide a snap shot for viewing).
oexpspecfile ARC/INFO V 7.0.3 GRID file (will convert to different things)
copyright none (except a lot of the work was done by Jackson 1977)
