Crown Area of Hamsterley trees

Crown width was measured at 1 metre intervals along the stem. Measurements were made parallel to the ground, rather than North-South or East-West. This was done since it was not physically possible to turn the crowns of overturned trees so that a "directional" measurement could be taken. This was converted into a total exposed crown area. The snapped trees had the smallest crowns on average, and the standing trees the largest. This was unexpected since it implies that those trees subjected to the greatest wind loads are least likely to be damaged.

Compare this with the data for Grizedale.
