DAVID CRICHTON
An economist and highly experienced insurance underwriter who has developed a unique reputation for his expertise on the impacts of climate change and natural disasters from an insurance perspective.
His understating of Insurers' and reinsurers' need is combined with the knowledge of the latest data and catastrophe modeling techniques.
He has developed good links with government, academia and NGO's which give him "behind the scenes" knowledge of current thinking and research, and he frequently advises and represents the Association of British Insurers on UK flood and storm risk issues.

From a history that can be traced back to 1696, CGU is now the largest UK-based life and general insurance group. 1998 brought rapid progress in integrating the merged operations and strengthening the three core businesses of life and savings, general insurance and asset management.

United Kingdom:
Total premium income and sales of investment products: £6,292m
CGU is the largest life and general insurer in the UK. The merger has involved both arms of the business.
France:
Total premium income: £2,433m
CGU is one of France's top ten life and general insurers.
Netherlands:
Total premium income: £1,094m
Delta Lloyd, our company in the Netherlands, ranks fifth in the market for both life and general insurance, with life business accounting for two-thirds of its premium income.
Other European operations:

As well as the UK, France and the Netherlands, CGU operates in 18 other countries in Europe where it provides both life and general insurance.
United States:
Total premium income: £2,737m
The merger has catapulted CGU to 16th position in the general insurance market that accounts for 40% of the world's volume and is home to over 2,000 companies.
Canada:
Total premium income: £834m
The merger has strengthened CGU's position as the largest general insurer in Canada.
Australia & New Zealand:

CGU's businesses in Australia and New Zealand write all types of general insurance and each ranks within the top three in its marketplace.

CGU's operations in Asia are mainly in general insurance with substantial businesses and top five positions in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Managed by its International Division, CGU has businesses in South Africa, Brazil, Turkey, Pakistan and the Middle East. It is also preparing the ground for entry into China and India.
