Welcome to Soils@Hutton
This website provides a window into the diversity of soils research, skills and resources at The James Hutton Institute. Please use the image links above to find out more about individual research areas, resources and facilities.
We have a large team of highly skilled scientists, technicians, economists and social scientists who provide unrivalled expertise, knowledge, information and data about soils in their own right and also about soils within the wider social, economic and environmental contexts. Ultimately our efforts are focussed on sustainable soil use and management to tackle the world’s most challenging problems e.g. food security, water associated with food, water, energy, biodiversity, natural capital and climate change.
Our scientists are involved in many national and international initiatives which are working to deliver sustainable soil management practises and effective soil monitoring around the world. These activities include
- the UK Soil Observatory, which recently won the prestigious AGI award for Excellence with Impact.
- Membership of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soil
- Chairing of the European Soil Bureau Network
- Participation in the Global Soil Partnership and the European Network on Soil Awareness
