Microbes are the most abundant and diverse group of organisms. They play vital role in biogeochemical cycling and environmental sustainability. A better understanding of microbial communities is essential in order to unravel the complexities of ecological function such as the maintenance of biodiversity, Filtration, removal of toxic compounds and control of green house gas emissions. Additionally, there is a need to decipher niches for various microbial groups in our natural environment in order to fully understand the role of micro-organisms in environmental sustainability. The research in our laboratory spans across the fields of microbial ecology, environmental biotechnology and the utilisation of microbial communities to mitigate GHG emission.
