Windfarms are currently seen by some to be the answer to sustainable rural development and environmentally friendly energy production.

There is a continuing debate as to whether it is reasonable to expect one rural area to 'pay' the visual cost of windfarms to satisfy the rest of the country's energy demands.

There are a number of proposals to install windfarms on the Western Isles, some of which have caused conflict.
