Dr John Milne is Deputy Director of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and Head of the Ecology and Animal Science Group. He has 25 years experience of research on the study of the components of domestic livestock systems and on the development of new systems with current and novel livestock species, such as farmed deer and goats for fibre production. His current research interests include modelling the environmental impact of domestic livestock systems and he leads the vegetation dynamics and herbivore foraging projects at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute. Dr Milne has been heavily involved in the development of the research programme of that Institute, particularly in relation to land use issues in disadvantaged areas of the UK. He has considerable experience of European conditions and has collaborated with scientists in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Eire, Germany and Denmark in research related to domestic livestock systems and rural development. Dr Milne is also leader of a EC Thematic Network to improve the competitiveness of European Speciality Fibres.
