ALFA PROGRAMME

THE VAGAR NETWORK

The Dipartimento di Scienze Zootecniche is involved in a new project to create a network called VAGAR (Valorizaçao do Germoplasma Autoctono dos Ruminantes - Germplasm exploitation of environmentally- adapted ruminants for quality production), within the scope of the ALFA-NATURA programme.

The network includes research groups from Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.

European and Latin American researchers involved in studies on typical production systems to identify in each country the existing autocthonous germplasm of ruminants The aim of the project is to promote scientific and academic exchanges between European and Latin American researchers involved in studies on typical production systems to identify, in each country, the existing indigenous ruminant germplasm that may supply useful quality products and allow their exploitation and diffusion.

The project is organised in two phases. In the first, the genotypes to be exploited will be selected (observing EU rules, 20-06-94 n°1467/94 on biodiversity conservation). Later, a system-analytical approach to the study of these genotypes will be developed. The second period two meetings will be held, coinciding with short stays for Latin American researchers in Europe to discuss the related topics, refine the common methodologies, agree on the series of analyses and finally draft a joint research project. The duration of the project is one year.
