Technology Transfer

CHABOS has pioneered the establishment of mechanisms for technology transfer and technology support which are geared to improvements in national prosperity and the quality of life. These operate at several levels, from the operation of subsidiary commercial companies to the provision of an extension and advisory service to farmers and land managers.

Technology transfer from many of the CHABOS organisations is handled through subsidiary companies which operate closely with local enterprise companies to market specific expertise, protect intellectual property through patenting and licensing agreements, and carry out applied contract research for industry. They have been involved, for example, in the development of vaccines and diagnostic kits. In their different ways, both MRS Ltd. and SASA play a major role in the development, testing or marketing of new plant varieties. MLURI, through its subsidiary MRCS Ltd., designs and implements Decision Support Systems and plays a major role in monitoring of environmentally sensitive areas. Royalty agreements cover the marketing of equipment used in the management of fishery resources.

CHABOS enhances the sustainability of rural industries and communities and supports the implementation of Government policies. This encompasses animal care and welfare, the development of environmentally sensitive technologies, and conservation of the countryside and wildlife. Through its advisory and extension services and industry group communication, SAC ensures that research findings are transferred into practical solutions to meet Government policy and public-good priorities.

Technology transfer between individual SABRIs and farmers, land managers and food processors is also facilitated through charities and friendly societies such as the Moredun Foundation, the Scottish Society for Crop Research and the Scottish Land Users' Association. Up-to-date information on animal health, crop research and land use is regularly transmitted through regular publications, seminars and exhibitions.

Consultancy work is also carried out both nationally and internationally, either by individual organisations or as members of other consortia such as the Aberdeen Research Consortium. CHABOS members work closely with the ODA, FAO and related organisations to meet the needs of Developing Countries.
