BESSA (Building Ecosystem Service Research Capacity in Semi-Arid Africa)BESSA logo

The objective of this project is to establish a network of researchers and a research agenda focused on developing methodologies and tools to analyse tradeoffs and synergies between different ecosystem services to address poverty alleviation in semi-arid Africa.



Building natural resource monitoring capacity in Ethiopia's key Afro-montane ecosystemsDarwin Initiative

The Darwin Initiative assists countries that are rich in biodiversity but poor in financial resources to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) through the funding of Defra - Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairscollaborative projects which draw on UK biodiversity expertise. Researchers from the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute have successfully applied for funding from the Darwin Initiative to help build natural resource monitoring capacity in Ethiopia’s key Afro-montane ecosystems.



GILDED (Governance, Infrastructure, Lifestyle Dynamics and Energy Demand)

Gilded logo and linkGILDED is a three year collaborative research project funded through European Union Framework Seven, running from December 2008-2011. The overall goal of GILDED is to identify social, economic, cultural and political changes which could help rural and urban households in Europe consume less energy.

HUNT is an interdisciplinary international research project, financed by the EU's 7th Framework program, looking into the wider meaning of hunting in the 21st century.



Janeemo logoJANEEMO is an innovative new enterprise based on ethical biofuels and their by-products. Using a combination of three trees, grown on marginal land, it provides an additional resource to food and other crops. JANEEMO generates income, provides renewable energy, food and medicine. North Hunt: Sustainable Hunting Tourism in Northern Europe

North Hunt logo and linkNorth Hunt is a three year international project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, involving a partnership of ten organisations from Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Scotland and Canada.


Pantanal International Network

The main objective of the Pantanal international network is to enable a group of British, European and Brazilian scientists to explore the potential for modelling, informed data capture and scenario analysis to be used in a participatory way to inform future policy-making in the Pantanal, a highly vulnerable ecosystem of global significance.


REDD-ALERT REDD alert logo and link to website

- Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation through Alternative Landuses in Rainforests of the Tropics. REDD-ALERT is an FP7 EU project lead by the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and involving 10 partner institutions from EU and tropical countries.


REEF (Reproductive Effects of Environmental chemicals in Females)

REEF is an EU-funded research project which will improve our understanding of how environmental chemicals and endocrine-disrupting compounds endanger reproduction and foetal development in the female.  


SMILE (Synergies in Multi-scale Inter-Linkages of Eco-social systems)

The project will be based on previous work carried out by the project partners in a FP6 DECOIN project (Development and Comparison of Sustainability Indicators, see The idea is to use the procedure that have been developed in DECOIN to analyse the trade-offs and synergies between different aspects of sustainable development.


Defra - Department for Environment, Food and Rural AffairsBiodiversity in Chilean Temperate Rainforests

This multidisciplinary project funded by the Darwin Initiative is developing capacity for biodiversity conservation in the temperate rainforest region of southern Chile.
